Hukun Hurur running for Ward 1 councillor
Fort McMurray resident Hukun Hurur is campaigning for a seat as one of Wood Buffalo’s Ward 1 councillors.
Hurur, 53, moved to Fort McMurray 14 years ago from Toronto. His campaign will focus on empowering residents, fighting poverty and creating opportunity for the region.
“If we work with the provincial government we can achieve a lot of goals,” he said in a Thursday interview.
For the last five years, Hurur has worked as contractor providing services to oilsands plants, and for five years previous to that he worked in immigrant settlement services at the YMCA.
Hurur said he was concerned about fly-in fly-out and its effects on Fort McMurray. The community should offer good opportunities for its residents, he said, adding his four children were born and raised here.
“I don’t want Fort McMurray to become a transitional city,” he said.
If he wins the election, Hurur says his goal will be to work well with council as part of a team.
